ما تزال حقيقة السومريين تشكل تحدياً علمياً ولغزاً يحير الباحثين والمتخصصين في حقل الدراسات الأركيولوجية حينما يتعلق الأمر بدراسة حضارة شعوب بلاد الرافدين القديمة، وهناك أسئلة كثيرة تتردد عن أصل السومريين، وإلى أي أرومة قومية ولغوية ينتمون، ومن أين جاؤوا، وأي طرق سلكوا، وهل هم من سكان المنطقة الأصليين، وبقيت دون أن تلقى إجابات علمية حتى الآن.
في هذا الكتاب يتصدى المؤلف لهذه الأسئلة وغيرها، وفق منهجية مختلفة، وأسلوب يستند إلى أدلة وحقائق علمية، وينتهي إلى ما يمكن تسميتها بـ"نظرية جديدة" تقول: إن كلمة سومر لم تكن لتشير إلى وجود شعب، وإنما إلى لغة ابتكرها الأكاديون للتدوين. ثم يقدم عرضاً شاملاً للنصوص المسمارية وأعدادها، والمواقع التي اكتشفت فيها، مع نصوص أكادية تترجم لأول مرة إلى العربية، من النص المسماري مثل: "نصائح إلى الحكام".
ثن يتناول تاريخ عدد من أقدم مدن المنطقة من بينها مدينتا أربيل وكركوك، ويبين من خلال الاكتشافات الأثرية كيف عاشت منطقة ديالى أزهى عصور الحضارة القديمة قبل ما يقارب من 4000 عاماً. ثم يتحدث عن التقنيات التي أوصلته إلى اكتشاف مدينة ميتران التي توصل سكانها قبل نحو 3900 عام إلى أن الشمس مركز الكون وأ، تسعة كواكب كروية تدور حولها.
