من المسائل الكبرى التي تشترك الديانات في معالجتها التكوين والخلق. فمن خلال معالجة هذه المسألة تتبلور العقيدة الخاصة بأصل الكون ونشوء الحياة وخلق الإنسان. وهذه هي العقيدة الأساس التي تبنى عليها، في أي ديانة، العقائد التي تحدد صلة الإنسان بالكون وضمان ديمومة الحياة وضوابط السلوك الإنساني. ويجري ذلك كله في إطار صلة العابد بالمعبود.
لقد ابتدأت الديانات التوحيدية الثلاث بسفر التكوين واشتركت في الإيمان بخلق الإله الواحد الأحد للكون في ستة أيام وفراغه منه في اليوم السابع. وفي الحضارات القديمة اعتبرت قصة الخليقة البابلية "حينما في العلى" المدونة بالخط المسماري على سبعة ألواح طينية، أشهر وأكمل قصة عن التكوين والخلق. وحوادثها تتسلسل من بدء الوجود بالمياه الهيولية الأولى حتى تفريد الإله مردوخ ونعته بالأسماء الخمسين التي تنقل إليه وحده سلطات الآلهة الكبار. وقد يرى الباحثون فيها نذر انتقال البشرية الى التوحيد.
أصبح نص "حينما في العلى" البابلي مداراً لبحوث عديدة في الغرب منذ اكتشاف أولى ألواحه في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر. ولم تنقل الى اللغة العربية، الشقيقة للغة الأصلية للنص، سوى ترجمة إنكليزية قديمة لهذا النص المهم. ولذلك جاء هذا الكتاب ليقدم أول ترجمة عربية مباشرة للنص المسماري. ويتضمن الكتاب النص المسماري وقراءاته بالحرف العربي واللفظ الأكدي مع فهارس بالأسماء والأفعال والعلامات المسمارية ليكون مفيداً في دراسة اللغة الأكدية والخط المسماري أيضاً.
