انتشرت على نطاق جغرافي واسع، وحرّرت بها عشرات الآلاف من النصوص المتنوعة في لغاتها وموضوعاتها، ولذلك فهي تُعدّ مصدراً أساسياً لدراسة التاريخ السياسي والحضاري لشعوب الشرق القديم.
