يشهد كوكب الأرض تغيّرات، على جانب كبير من الأهمية، في حياة الإنسان والنبات والحيوان، وكافة الكائنات الحيّة الأخرى المتواجدة عليه، التي يعبّر عنها بالمفهوم العلمي" التنوّع الحيوي".
ومن أجل تسليط الضوء على ما تتعرّض له الحياة بجميع أبعادها، جاء هذا الكتاب ليعرض، أولاً، واقع الغذاء العالمي والعربي، ويستعرض ثانياً واقع التنوع الحيوي في الوطن العربي، وقد أولى المؤلف أهمية خاصة للموارد الطبيعية (الأرض والمياه)؛ الموطن الفعلي للتنوّع الحيوي، مبيّناً الصورة المخيفة لعمليات تدهور الموارد المائية والأرضية، وبالتالي فقد تنوّعها الحيوي؛ داعياً إلى التعاون الوثيق بين الدول المتطورة والدول النامية في استخدام التقنيات الحديثة، وأموال النفط، والكادر العلمي، وتنفيذ الاستراتيجيات الدولية والإقليمية والمحلية الخاصة بحماية التنوع الحيوي، وإبقائه مورداً هاماً لتأمين الغذاء للأجيال حاضراً ومستقبلاً.
وقد اتخذ المؤلف من القطر السوري نموذجاً لدراسة المواضيع الهامة في التنوع الحيوي، من حيث الاقتصاديات، والتنمية الاقتصادية– الاجتماعية– الثقافية، والحماية، كما تعرّض للتشريعات التي من المفضّل أن تعدها الجهات المعنية والمختصة للمحافظة، بشكل أكثر دقة وصدقية وتعاملاً، على التنوع الحيوي.
