تعد حضارة العراق القديمة من أولى الحضارات التي عرفتها البشرية ، إذا امتلكت جملة من المميزات جعلتها تكتسب قصب السبق في ميادين الحياة كافة . وقد تنوعت بتنوع الحياة ولم تكتفِ يوماً في إعطاء دروسها لفهم الحياة لجعلها أسهل . فمنذ أن بدأ الإنسان فجر حياته وصراعه مع بيئته أملاً في التكيف ، بزغت لنا شمس فكر لم ينفك يوماً في فك لغز الحياة . وسطّر ذلك بأفضل أشكال الجد والعمل ، ونتيجة لنتاج ذلك الشعب الذي سطر أروع معاني الفكر بمختلف الأقوام التي بنته ، وانصهرت في بوتقة تلك الحضارة التي أبت أن تقدم فكراً من غير أن تكون حاضرة ، وتعلن أنه ثوبها ، لذا كان لزاماً أن نقدم جزءاً مضيئاً من تلك الحضارة علناً نهتدي به .
تنوعت الدراسات التي اهتمت بحضارة العراق القديم وتاريخه ، وكانت تعكف غالباً على دراسة النتاج الحضاري من غير أن تمر على العقل الذي أنجب تلك الحضارة ، بمختلف صورها المادية والمعنوية . إن غنى تلك الحضارة فكرياً ومادياً أوحى أن تكون هذه الدراسة محاولة مخصصة لفهم العقلية العراقية وما حملته من فكر أغدق على البشرية فينا غنياً ألقى بظلاله على المعرفة الإنسانية حتى يومنا هذا . لذا فقد جعلنا جل اهتمامنا دراسة جذور ذلك الفكر وروافده ، أي أننا نحاول أن نقف على بدايات ذلك الفكر ومغذياته والعوامل التي أسهمت في تركيبه وتشكيله ، وأن نقدمه بما نفهم ابتداء من العوامل الطبيعية المحيطة به ، مروراً بالعوامل ما وراء الطبيعة وصولاً إلى طبيعة البشر وما اعتملت في نفسه من صفات أهلته حتى صار إنسانا .
تكمن أهمية الموضوع في الحاجة الملحة في فهم الفكر العراقي القديم ، جذوره وبداياته والعوامل التي أسهمت وتدخلت في بناء تلك العقلية ، لإعطاء تصور أوضح عن البُنى الفكرية التي امتاز بها العقل العراقي . ولا سيما إذا علمنا أن الدراسات الخاصة بهذا الجانب من الحضارة لم تحظَ بالقدر الذي يتناسب مع حجمها المادي والمعرفي . وإن عمر الحضارة العراقية القدمية ونتاجها ومميزاتها الفريدة كانت عوامل حاسمة في اختيار هذه الدراسة .
