يتناول هذا الكتاب السياسة الأميركية تجاه فترة من أهم أحداث فترات النزاع العربي الإسرائيلي، تلك الفترة التي شهدت اندلاع حرب أكتوبر 1973 وعقد اتفاقيات الفصل على الجبهتين المصرية والسورية من خلال دبلوماسية "الخطوة-خطوة الأميركية. دبلوماسية الرئيس الأميركي كارتر التي عرفت "بالدبلوماسية المفتوحة". هذا إلى جانب مبادرة السلام المصرية في نوفمبر 1977 وما أسفرت عنه من مباحثات شاركت فيها الولايات المتحدة الأميركية سواء في إطار اللجنة السياسية أو مؤتمر ليدز أو مؤتمر كامب دافيد الذي أثمر في نهايته عن عقد اتفاقيتي كامب دايفيد في سبتمبر 1978.
ولقد اتبع المؤلف في إعداد هذا الكتاب المنهج العلمي الذي سلكه في رسالته العلمية التي تقدم بها إلى كلية الاقتصاد والعلوم السياسية بجامعة القاهرة، ومن ثم فقد كان تحليله تحليلاً موضوعياً علمياً مستنداً على مجموعة كبيرة من المراجع والوثائق.
