على مدى العقود الثلاثة الماضية وحتى الآن، ترى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية أن بقاء مصالحها في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، مرتبط باستمرار الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلى، ولذلك انحازت الإدارة الأمريكية إلى إسرائيل في هذا الصراع، وظلت هذه الرؤية سمة ثابتة للسياسة الخارجية الأمريكية، منذ نهاية التنافس السوفييتي-الأمريكي، بل أنها زادت في واقع الأمر مع نهاية هذا التنافس. وقد سبب الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي للولايات المتحدة توتراً كبيراً فيما يتعلق بمصالحها الداخلية أو الخارجية، لا سيما أثناء الأزمات حيث تنجم إشكاليات كبرى في مجال السياسة الخارجية. وفي الفترات التي خلت من أزمات، خضت حدة التوتر نظراً لصياغة السياسة الأمريكية حيال الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي. أما على صعيد المواجهة الأميركية للاتحاد السوفيتي السابق وحلفائه، فإن هذا الموضوع كان يأتي على رأس الأولويات لدى الولايات المتحدة، وقد أحدثت نهاية الحرب الباردة، وحرب الخليج الثانية 1990 تغيرات في السياسة الأمريكية في العديد من النواحي. من هذا المنطلق، تناقش هذه المحاضرة انعكاسات الصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي على السياسة الأمريكية تجاه الشرق الأوسط، بدءاً من الغزو العراقي للكويت 1990، وانتهاءً بسياسة حكومة كلينتون. وفي هذا الصدد يذكر المحاضر بعض النتائج التي توصل إليها فيما يتعلق بالتطورات التي ستشهدها السياسة الأمريكية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط إذا ما تحقق السلام بين العرب وإسرائيل.
