يدور موضوع الكتاب حول أوجه الوحخدة والإختلاف في فكر شيخان عالمان يمثلان لحظة نضج في الفكر العربي الإسلامي هما "إبن عربي" و "إبن تيمية".
يناقش هذا الكتاب ثلاثة جوانب أساسية في فكر الشيخين إبن عربي وإبن تيمية. أولها موضوع بناء العالم، وهو الجانب الأكثر فلسفية من غيره، ويتشابه الشيخان لحد مذهل في المخطط الكوني العام الذي يفسر ظهور العالم عندهما بوصفه ظهوراً يقوم على فكرة التعين المتدرج الذي تلعب فيه الصفات الإلهية الدور الفلسفي المركزي أما الجانب الثاني في الكتاب فيناقش فكرة المعرفة الإنسانية وإمكانية قبول تعدد عقائد البشر، وفي هذا الجانب صاغ إبن تيمية كل المفاهيم الممكنة للبرهنة على أن فكرة الحقيقة كما تثبتها نظريته الفلسفية عن العالم تقتضي بالضرورة الإعتراف للآخرين بعقائدهم .. كذلك نجد ابن تيمية يستعير هذه المفاهيم ليجعلها أكثر مطابقة فيما يخص رؤيته عن العالم، وفي هذا الجانب تصبح فكرة تعدد العقائد فكرة تابعة أو مستندة على نظرية العالم نفسها. والجانب الثالث، يناقش الكتاب فكرة تأويل القرآن، وكلاهما يقدمان تصوراً جديداً عن التأويل يختلف عن النظريات السابقة، فلا هو تأويل يعتمد على المجاز اللغوي، كما فعل علم الكلام، ولا هو تأويل يقوم جذرياً على فكرة قسمة النص إلى ظاهر وباطن ... الأمر الذي يطرح إمكاناً جديداً ليس فقط لبناء فكر نظري عربي، بل لتجديد الدين نفسه. يتفق الشيخان على أن التأويل الحقيقي هو التأويل الذي يدرك قصد القول الإلهي في نصه، وهو الذي يمسك بهذا الإدراك بالحقائق بطريقة معينة .. وفي هذا يتفق الشيخان على وجوب فهم الحقيقة الموجودة في القول ذاته. مثلا، اتفق الشيخان على أن الآية القرآنية: "كل يوم هو في شأن" ]الرحمن:29[ تعني أن التجلي الإلهي عند إبن عربي، وفكرة الحدوث عند إبن تيمية هما حقيقة هذه الآية؛ التجدد والفاعلية المستمرة لله. وهذا يعني أن الخلق أزلي، لا بداية له ولا نهاية عندهما، فالصور العلمية لا نهاية لولادتها وتجسدها كموجودات في العالم، وهنا يصبح للآية معنى مفهوماً، أن كلمات الله لا تنفذ، بوصفها معلوماته التي تصاحب سيرورة حدوث أزلي ...
