كانت اللغة الإنسانية، موضوع علم اللسان الحديث، تتوسط بين الذات والموضوع، وتحتل موقعاً مركزياً في النشاط الإدراكي والثقافي والإجتماعي، وإذا كان تدافُع الخطابات اللغوية بما تحمله من معانٍ ومفاهيم وتعريفات وتأويلات متباينة، هو في جوهرة تدافُع على القوة والسيطرة، فلا عجب أن تترك نظريات علم اللسان الحديث تأثيراً عميقاً في الحقول المعرفية المختلفة من علم الإجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا إلى علم النفس إلى فلسفة المعرفة إلى النظرية الأدبية والنقدية إلى تحليل الخطاب السياسي نفسه.
وربما كانت ظاهرة التباين في العربية الفصحى أوسع مما يعتقد كثير من الباحثين ومما يقرُّ به بَعْضُ المتشدّدين المعيارين الذين يميلون إلى التضييق على مستعملي اللغة؛ ذلك أن العرب قبل الإسلام كانوا يتحدثون لهجات مختلفة اصطلح عليها "بلغات" العرب.
وهذه الدراسة التي أعدّها الدكتور وليد أحمد العناتي والموسومة بــ "التباين وأثره في تشكيل النظرية اللغوية العربية" تتصدى لدرس ظاهرة التباين في العربية في جوانبها الشكلية والوظيفية على مستويين: النظر العلمي والسياق التدوالي، وهي تظهر جهداً فائقاً متميزاً يؤهلها أن تكون مصدراً هاماً لدراسي العربية واللسانيين.
