صدر هذا الكتاب عن أهم فرض علمي في دراساتنا للتراث اللغوي العربي ، وهو قيام تراثنا اللغوي على نظريات لغوية متكاملة ، وعن ضرورة بيانها وعدم الاقتصار على الإيمان بها . ويقتضي هذا الفرض - ممن يتصدى له - القراءة الواعية للتراث اللغوي العربي والمعرفة الدقيقة بأصـول التنظير الحـديثة والقـدرة على التعمـق وحسن الاستنبــاط ودقـــة الاستكـنـــاه ، وعلـى مهــارات التصـــور الكـامــل والتخطيـط الكلـي . وأتصـور أن هـذا العمـل قد نجـح فيمـا رمى إليه فَقَـدَّم تَصَوُّرَ التراث الكامل والدقيق لأهم مفاهيم التنظير اللغوي من: ظاهرة ونظام ونظريـة ومنهج . وهو بمــا وصل إليـه يبـدو إجابة عن أخطر الأسئلة ، إن لم تكن أخطر الاتهامات ، التي وجهت لتراثنا اللغوي بخصوص النظرية اللغوية والمنهج والنظام اللغوي . وقد تجاوز الإجابة عن وجود هذه المفاهيم في تراثنا إلى وضع بناء كلي ومتكامل لهذه المفاهيم يصف فيه نظرية اللغة العامة ، ثم نظريات كل فرع من فروع الدرس اللغوي إلى أساسية ومكملة وبديلة .
