يُعَدُّ تعليم اللغة العربية قضية من القضايا الهامة في المجتمع العربي ثقافياً وإجتماعياً وسياسياً، وما يزال تعليم العربية يعاني مشكلات كثيرة أهمها غياب تأهيل علمي لساني وتربوي سليم لمن يقومون على هذه المهمة، وما زال التربويون العرب يصرون على أن تعليم العربية من صُلْب إختصاصهم، وأنه لا يجوز لغيرهم التدخل في هذا الباب من العلم.
والحق أن تعليم اللغات في العالم الغربي بات واحداً من أهم الإختصاصات التي تضطلع بها اللسانيات التطبيقية واللسانيات التربوية، ولعل النظر في مقدمة أي كتاب وضع في تعليم الإنجليزية يكشف عن إنتماء المؤلف إلى حقل اللسانيات التطبيقية.
ولعل المعضلة التي تواجهها أقسام التربية، في إحتكارها النظري لهذا الحقل، أنها تركز على الجوانب التنفيذية والشكلية في التعليم (أساليب التدريس)، ولا تصرف شطراً، ولو يسيراً، إلى الإعتبارات اللغوية الخالصة التي ينبغي التنبه إليها.
إن هذا البحث يحاول أن يستدرك كثيراً من المفاهيم الخاطئة التي تمارس في ميدان تعليم العربية، أكان ذلك عند إعداد المادة أو طرق تدريسها، وإنما كان هذا الإستدراك بمحاولة الكشف عن جهود متميزة للدكتور نهاد الموسى خلال ثلاثين سنة، استمر فيها منطلقات النظرية اللسانية الحديثة في تعليم العربية، واستدرك فيها على كثيرين إغفالهم المواءمة بين المادة والطريقة في وضع المناهج أو تعليم العربية.
وتمثل جهوده إستثماراً مبكراً لمعطيات اللسانيات الحديثة في تعليم اللغة العربية لأبنائها ولغير الناطقين بها، إذ تكاد تكون باب فرادة له، وهو في معالجته قضايا تعليم اللغة العربية، يتناول جانبين مهمين: الأول: طرائق تدريس العربية ووسائل إعداد المعلمين وتدريبهم على تدريس مهارات اللغة العربية المتعددة، الثاني: التآليف الجامعية والمدرسية: إذ ساهم في وضع مناهج اللغة العربية (القواعد) في مدارس الأردن وعمان واليمن والإمارات، ينضاف إلى ذلك مساهماته الجُلَّى في حقل تعديل المناهج وتطويرها في عدد من البلدان العربية والإسلامية.
