لا أقصد بهذه الترجمة أن أدعو إلى نظرية، أو أروج لمذهب وإنما هي محاولة لمعرفة نظرية علمية أثرت في الفكر اللغوي الإنساني منذ أكثر من ربع قرن، ومازال أثرها واضحاً حتى اليوم في دراسات وأبحاث علماء اللغة المعاصرين، حتى قيل إن أية نظرية لغوية لا يمكن أن تتجاهل نظرية تشومسكي، بل إن مكانة أي نظرية وإنجازها في حقل الدراسات اللغوية المعاصرة يتحدد بمدى صلتها بنظرية تشومسكي، قرباً وبعداً أو نقداً وتعديلاً.
وترجع أهمية هذا الكتاب إلى أن المؤلف قد عرض أصوله قبل نشره على تشومسكي فقرأها وأدخل عليها بعض التعديلات كما اتفق مع المؤلف في كثير مما ذهب إليه في شرحه للنظرية التحويلية ولكنه اختلف معه أيضاً في جوانب أخرى يرى المؤلف أنها تمثل نقاط خلاف بينه وبين تشومسكي وقد نبه عليها في هوامش الكتاب وترجمناها في مواضعها كما أن القارئ لن تجد صعوبة في العثور عليها في متن الكتاب وخاصة في الفصل الأخير منه، كما يعد هذا الكتاب من الكتب التي عول عليها كثير ممن كتبوا حول النظرية التحويلية باللغة العربية، ويقع الكتاب في عشرة فصول وخاتمة وثلاثة ملاحق، وهي كالتالي:-
الفصل الأول: مقدمة، الفصل الثاني: علم اللغة الحديث "أهدافه واتجاهاته"، الفصل الثالث: مدرسة بلومفيلد، الفصل الرابع: أهداف النظرية اللغوية، الفصل الخامس: النحو التوليدي "صورة مبسطة"، الفصل السادس: قواعد تركيب أركان الجملة، الفصل السابع: النحو التحويلي، الفصل الثامن: التطورات المعاصرة للمدارس التشومسكية في علم اللغة، الفصل التاسع: الأصول النفسية للنحو التحويلي، الفصل العاشر: فلسفة اللغة والعقل.
