قام النحو العربي على أساس منهجية التزمها النحاة وساروا عليها، وَلِفَهْمِ فلسفة النحو لا بد من معرفة هذه الأصول الفكرية والمنهجية التي اعتمد عليها النحاة في بناء صرح النحو، ومن هذه الأسس مبدأ التحويل، الذي اعتمد عليه النحاة العرب في كثير من معالجتهم للظواهر اللغوية، وإن لم يتعاملوا معه كمصطلح لغوي عُرف واشتهر في نظرية النحو التوليدي التحويلي للعالم الأمريكي تشومسكي في كتابه "الأبنية التركيبية".
والتحويل في النحو العربي يقوم على إفتراض بنيتين للجملة، الأولى: باطنية، والثانية: سطحية، وعبر النحاة عن مفهوم البنية العميقة بعبارات مختلفة، منها؛ أصله كذا وقياسه كذا، هو على تقدير كذا، والجمل الأصلية المحوّل عنها قد تكون إفتراضية بحتة، وقد تكون من الجمل المستعملة ولكن تحولت لغرض المبالغة، أو بسبب كثرة الإستعمال، وأكثر إفتراضات وتقديرات النحاة تقوم على اعتبار المعنى، وفي حالات كثيرة لجأ النحاة إلى مبدأ التحويل لتُوافِق بعضُ التراكيب القواعدَ الأصول.
