تدعي هذه الدراسة لنفسها مقاربة نظرية العلم في التراث العربي-الإسلامي من زاوية نظر جديدة، وبالارتكاز إلى حقل معرفي غير مسبوق في تناول نظرية العلم في التراث، والدافع إلى هذه المقارنة: أهمية الموضوع من جهة، وغياب الكتاب الجادة والمختصة في هذا المجال من مجالات التراث العربي-الإسلامي، على الرغم من غنى التراث المكتوب بالمواد الخام والأولية التي تسمح بإعادة قراءة/كتابة أو صياغة نظرية العلم في تراثنا، من جهة ثانية.
هذا وقد اقتضت طبيعة هذه الدراسة التأسيسية وأهدافها، بنية قوامها بابان يتألف كل منهما من فصلين، يندرج تحتهما عدد كبير من الأقسام إضافة إلى فصل ختامي مقارن. الباب الأول: إن الطبيعة التأسيسية لنظرية العلم في التراث دفعت المؤلف إلى استقصاء الموقف التراثي من العلم (القسم الأول من الفصل الأول)، من خلال ملاحقته لتعريفاته من النصوص من الفارابي إلى العطار والتي تبين أنها تشتغل على معنيين للعلم.
