يبحث كتاب (مكانة السلطات الأبوية في عصر العولمة) في (تحولات التعليم في العالم العربي في ظروف العولمة) وهو يدخل في خانة سوسيولوجيا الثقافة كأداة لتفكيك خواطر العولمة في المعمل الثقافي.
جاء الكتاب في جزأين رئيسين، الأول: عن التأثيرات السوسيو ثقافية والتربوية للعولمة، وتأثيرها على الهوية، من منظور كوني عام، ثم تضيف دائرة المنظور لتتناول تأثيرات العولمة على الهوية العربية والإسلامية، وتحديداً في المخزون التربوي والتعليمي. اما الجزء الثاني فيتناول بصورة أكثر تحديداً مكانة المعلم في عصر العولمة، كأنموذج جلي لتأثيرات العولمة على مكانة السلطات الأبوية. حيث سعى المؤلف إلى مقاربة سوسيولوجية لمفاهيم المكانة والهيبة والرضا، وبالعودة إلى دلالة النسبية الثقافية، المؤطرة لكافة اشكال التحليل الثقافي للظواهر الاجتماعية.
تحت عنوان "تأثيرات العولمة على الهوية" يقول زياد الدريس: "إن الحديث عن الهوية وسبل الحفاظ عليها يلتبس دوماً بنزعة تقليدية محافظة تقضي إلى الانفلاق التام والانفرال هرباً من المؤثرات الخارجية، دون أن تدرك أن انعزالها هو إفقارها من إثراء التعددية والتنوع الثقافي. إن موقف الهويات المهددة من العولمة يجب أن يستنير بالموقف الوسطي بين الذوبان والانفلاق (...) وهكذا تتنادى كل أمة واعية متفاعلة لحماية الجذور/ الهوية من تفريط الأنا أو عبث الآخر، لكنها في الآن نفسه ترى لزاماً عليها أن تعرض سيقان وأوراق هويتها لشمس ورياح التنوع الثقافي حتى لا تذبل".
