يتألف الكتاب من ثلاثة أجزاء وملحق، وجاء الجزء الأول منه أقرب إلى علم النفس منه إلى علم الاجتماع، في حين جاء الجزء الثاني توضيحاً للبنية الاجتماعية والفردية للمجتمعات الذكورية، أما الجزء الثالث فقد أخذ طابعاً تحليلياً لهذه المجتمعات، من “ناحية نظرية الحق ومقولاتها، أي الملكية والحدود، ومن ناحية الاقتصاد الاجتماعي الذي يؤدي إلى الاقتصاد السياسي”.
وفي تصريح لـ”حرية برس”، ذكر الباحث “جلال مراد” أن كتابه هذا دراسة تدلل على “مرحلة من تاريخ العالم تمتد من المرحلة العشائرية وصولاً إلى المرحلة المدنية الرأسمالية، وتغطي مرحلة حكم الأسر كما حصل في الصين وشرق آسيا وفي المنطقة العربية، كما تغطي أنظمة الحكم الدكتاتورية والشمولية”.
وتابع “مراد” أن تلك الأنظمة السياسية “أخذت حياتها من امتداد حكم الأب في الأسرة للدولة والمجتمع، وتشكل بنية عمادها هيمنة وسيطرة الأب”. ويرصد الكتاب وفقاً للكاتب “هيكلية هذا النمط في الحكم، وبشكل أدق يرصد البنية الاجتماعية والنفسية لهذا النمط. وبهذا المعنى بحث (المجتمعات الأبوية) يشكل مرحلة مفردة من مجموعة مراحل
