يقول الفقيه السيد محمد كاظم الطباطبائي اليزدي في مقدمة كتابه : " ... هذه جملة مسائل مما تعمّ به البلوى ، وعليها الفتوى ، جمعت شتاتها ، وأحصيت متفرقاتها عسى أن ينتفع بها إخواننا المؤمنون ، ... " . ويعتبر هذا الكتاب من المراجع الفقهية الهامة ، إذ تضمنت مسائل الفقه جميعها . وقد رتبها المؤلف ضمن كتب وفصول . استهلها بفصل فيما جاء في التقليد وشروط المجتهد ، وطرق معرفة فتواه ، وكيفية تحقق التقليد ، ليتبع ذلك بالكتب الفقهية ، التالية : الطهارة ومسائلها ورتبها ضمن فصول ( في المياه ، في الماء الجاري ، في الماء الراكد ... ) مضمناً ذلك بكتاب في النجاسات ( كتاب ... فصل في النجاسات ، في طرق ثبوت النجاسة ، في كيفية تنجس المتنجسات ... فصل فيما يُشترط في صحة الصلاة ... في الصلاة في النجس ، ما يُعفى عنه في الصلاة ... ) ثم فصول في حكم الأواني ، أحكام التخلي ، في الإستنجاء ، في الإستبراء ، في مستحبات التخلي ومكروهاته ، في موجبات الوضوء ... ثم فصل في الإغسال ومسائله وأحكامه ، وفصل في التيمم ووسائله . ليتبع ذلك كتاب الصلاة ومسائلها وأحكامها وذلك ضمن فصول . ثم كتاب الصوم مسائله وأحكامه ، وكتاب الإعتكاف ومسائله وأحكامه ، وكتاب الزكاة وسائله وأحكامه ، ثم كتاب الخمس وأيضاً مسائله وأحكامه ، والحج وسائله وأحكامه ، وكتاب الضمان ؛ مسائله وأحكامه ، كتاب الحوالة مسائلها وأحكامها ، كتاب النكاح : مسائله وأحكامه ، وأخيراً كتاب الوصية مسائلها وأحكامها . ونظراً لأهمية هذا الكتاب " العروة الوثقى " فقد تم الإعتناء به من خلال شرحه ، وجاء هذا الشرح موضحاً ، ومبيّناً لما شابه غموض ، ولم يغفل الشارح عن إبداء رأيه في كثير من المسائل مع التعليق .
