«العروة الوثقى» يحمل هذا الكتاب اسم جريدة العروة الوثقى التي أسسها جمال الدين الأفغاني وأصدرها بمشاركة الشّيخ محمّد عبده، حيث تولّى جمال الدّين إدارةَ الجريدة التي لم يكن عمرها طويلًا، وتسلّم الشيخ محمّد عبده تحريرها.
ألّف الأفغاني هذا الكتاب الذي حمل تطلّعات الجريدة وأخبارها وآراءها في السّياسة والمجتمع، تتضمّن رسالةً نقيّةً ترفع روح المعنويّة والثّبات لدى الأمّة العربيّة والإسلاميّة، بعدما عصف بها الاحتلال وترك فيها من أثره الموجع على همم الأفراد في المجتمع ونفسيّاتهم.
جمع الكتاب ما تفرّق من الفِكر، وتشتّت من الصّور، وبه يختصر الأفغاني ما يرمي إليه فكره، وما تحثُّ عليه رسالته التي انطلقت تجوب العالم بأهدافها السّامية، ويمثّل مساعيه كي ينتشل الأمّة الأفغانيّة ممّا حلّ بها من فرقة وانقسام، لتطهيرها من أدران الاحتلال.
كان الشّيخ محمد عبده يأخذ عنه العلم من مجالسه، فاتّسق فكر كل منهما مع الآخر، وتوحّد المنهج، فبعثتا في الأمّة مادّةَ الحياة، إلى أن تم إيقاف الجريدة، والعمل على مصادرة أعدادها، وفرض غرامةٍ على من يقتنيها كذلك.
