فى السنوات الأخيرة، صادفنا عددا كبيرا من الشركات التى بدأت في استخدام قياس الأداء المتوازن، وصاغت شركات كثيرة تصميما واسما خاصين بنموذجها، مستخدمة جزءا منه فقط في بعض الأحيان. وتعد كاب آل Kapp Ahl حالة نموذجية نوعا ما، ففى الصناعة التى تعمل فيها، وهىتجارة تجزئة الملابس، تكمن القيمة بدرجة رئيسية فى علاقات العملاء والقدرة العملياتية، وهذان العنصران ليسا متضمين في الرقابة الأدارية التقليدية القائمة على أساس مالى، ومع ذلك يستطيع المرء بالكاد أن يربط هذه المنشأة ومجال أعمالها بمفاهيم مثل "رأس المال الفكرى" ولذا فإذا كانت القياسات مفيدة لشركة "كاب آل" فإنها قد تكون أكثر فائدة بالنسبة لشركات أخرى.
وقد تزايد اعتماد المنشآت الصناعية الآن على علاقات العملاء، والقدرة الابتكارية، والمعرفة التقنية بالعمليات، فيما يتناقص اعتمادها على المنشآت المادية، وفى حالة المشروعات الخدمية والوكالات الحكومية، يبدو هذا الاتجاه أكثر بروزا ووضوحا.
فى هذا الملف سنعرض عددا من الأمثلة المححدة لمنشآت تستخدم المقاييس أو نماذج أخرى مشابهة، حيث تشترك جميعا فى ملمح واحد وهو صعوبة وصف عملياتها من المنظور المالى التقليدي. لقد هددت الرقابة الإدارية التقليدية قيما أدرك كبار المديرين التنفيذيين أهميتها على المدى الطويل مثل استخدام الموارد غير المالية كالمراكز السوقية، والمعرفة التقنية، وأنظمة/ تكنولوجيا المعلومات استخداما اقتصاديا، والاعتماد على خبرة كثير من الموظفين، والتشجيع باستمرار على إيجاد تعريف مميز للمنشأة وأعمالها متوائم مع السيناريوهات المستقبلية الممكنة التصور.
