ذات مرة كتب محرر عامود خاص في إحدى الصحف يدعى: "جيمس كيلباتريك": اسم المباراة هو القوة. لا شيء آخر. من يمتلك القوة. كيف يحصل عليها، كيف يتم تفويض القوة. كيف يتم تقييد القوة، كيف تتم ممارسة القوة- هذه هي الأسئلة التي ننهمك فيها. يتردد صدى هذا الإحساس بواسطة "ماري كيننجهام"، التي أجبرت على الاستقالة من شركة "بيندكس" باعتبارها أعلى أنثى في التصنيف (نائب الرئيس للشئون العامة للشركة) في سن 28 بسبب "سلوكها العام غير الملائم" مع ويليام أجيي رئيس مجلس إدارة بيندكس. مدعية أن "الشائعات حول العلاقة لا شيء سوى تعصب جنسي سمج، تركت الشركة من أجل وظيفة نائب الرئيس للتخطيط الإستراتيجي في شركة "سيجرامس". بزيادة كبيرة في الراتب. متأملة هذه الخبرة. علقت: "درسوا لنا في مدرسة إدارة الأعمال عن التدفق النقدي وليس عن سياسة الشركة: عن العائد على الأسهم وليس عن الأنانية والغرور. لقد علمتني خبرتي أنه يجب أن توجد (مناهج دراسية عن القوة) بنفس مقدار المنهج الدراسي الأساسي الموجود عن الإنتاج والتسويق والتمويل". يتفق مع هذا التقييم الأستاذ "جون كوتير" بجامعة "هارفارد" والذي يدرس منهجاً عن القوة. يقول: "يرهقني سماع الاقتصاديين يبلغون الطلاب أن وظيفتهم هي تعظيم أرباح المساهمين". ستكون وظيفتهم إدارة حشد كلي من الدوائر: الرؤساء، المرؤوسين، العملاء. الموردين، النقابات، وغيرها وتعتبر محاولة الحصول على التعاون من مختلف الدوائر مهمة أصعب بطريقة لا نهائية عن جلب مشروعك من أجل النقود".
بعد هذه التعليقات، ليس مفاجئاً أن العديد من الخبراء يحاولون إثبات أن الاستعمال الفعال للقوة هو عنصر الإدارة الوحيد الأكثر حسماً، وهذا الملف بموضوعاته عن القوة والنفوذ وكيف يمكننا كسبهما باستراتيجيات تنظيمية وخصائص وظيفية محددة، وهو ملف يجمع بين الشروح التفصيلية والأمثلة التطبيقية.
