إن الألم ليس هو الإصابة، ولم يكن أبداً امتداداً للتغيير العضوي، بل شناطاً من المعنى الذي يؤثر في الشخص الذي يعاني، فالإحساس بالألم، يعني المعاناة، وليس أبداً تكراراً للحدث الجسدي، إنه تشكيل، ونتيجة لعلاقة خاصة بوضعية ما، فحدود التحمل عند البعض، وحسب السياقات، ليست هي نفسها عند البعض الآخر، والعلاقة بالألم هي دوماً عند الفرد مسألة الدلالة والقيمة، علاقة حميمية بالمعنى، وليس بالعتبة البيولوجية، إن الألم ليس فقط "بدنياً"، بل يشمل الفرد برمته، بدءاً من علاقة ذاته بالعالم، طالما أنه يشتغل في الجسد بكامله، يعني في الشخص، فالألم الذي يمس الأسنان أو الظهر يجتاح في الواقع عالم الفرد في كليته، ويتضي ضمنياً دوياً معنوياً، يمسح الألم الثنائيات الموروثة عن التقاليد الميتافيزقية لمجتمعاتنا: جس وروح، بدن ونفس، عضوي وسيكولوجي، موضوعي وذاتي، مرئي وغير مرئي-الخ، إذ يمكن بالمناسبة معارضة المعاناة الموجودة في البدن بالمعاناة الموجودة في الوجود، خاصة وأن الانحلال نفسه الذي يعتمل على المحك مع مركز ثقل ينتقل ليس فقط، بين قطبين، بل بين خطين من القوة لا يتوقفان عن التشابك.
