الألم ليس استنساخا في الوعي لشرْخ عضوي، إنه يمزج الجسد بالمعنى. وهو جسْدنة للدلالة وبناءٌ لها. الألم لدى الفرد هو المواجهة بين واقعة جسدية وعالم من المعنى والقيم. والإحساس به ليس تسجيلا لتأثّر معين بقدر ما هو الصدى الداخلي لمُصاب واقعي أو رمزي. وفي الإحساس بالعالم، يكون الألم نفسه طريقة أخرى للتفكير فيه، وتغييره من المحسوس إلى المعقول. تحيل التجربة الإنسانية أولا إلى الدلالات التي بها يتم عيش العالم، لأن هذا الأخير لا يمنح نفسه بشكل آخر. ويكون التأثر العاطفي أول شيء في الإحساس بالألم، فهو يقيس حدته ونبرته. فكل ألم يكون وراء تحريك دلالة وتأثر عاطفي ما.
