تحتل المناهج مركزاً حيوياً في العملية التربوية لا بل تعتبر إلى حد ما العمود الفقري للتربية، والمنهج في أبسط تعريف له هو مجموع الخبرات التعليمية المباشرة وغير المباشرة التي يعدها المجتمع لتربية الأفراد وإعدادهم في ضوء ظروف البيئة الإجتماعية، وما يهدف إلى تحقيقه من آمال وإنجازات مستقبلية... وبهذا المعنى يكون المنهج هو المرأة التي تعكس واقع المجتمع وفلسفته وثقافته وحاجاته وتطلعاته، وهو الصورة التي تنفذ بها سياسة الدولة في جميع أبعادها السياسية والإجتماعية والثقافية والتربوية والإقتصادية.
ويتوقف تنفيذ المنهج ونجاحه على المعلم، وعلى الأساليب والأنشطة التي يختارها، بإعتباره المسؤول الأول عن تحقيق الأهداف التي يتطلع إليها المجتمع كما تمثلت في المنهج، وحتى يقوم المعلم بدوره على خير وجه فلا بد له من التعرف إلى ماهية المناهج وأساليبها، من هنا تبرز الحاجة إلى دراسة مساق المناهج في برامج إعداد المعلمين في الجامعات والكليات الخاصة بأعداد المعلمين.
وبناء عليه، فإننا نضع هذا الكتاب بين يدي أصحاب العلاقة المباشرة ببرامج إعداد المعلمين، مساهمة علمية في إطار المحاولات للكشف عن العديد من جوانب الفكر التربوي السائد في المجتمع، ولمعرفة الأسس التي تتم بموجبها عملية تخطيط المناهج وتنفيذها، وبالتالي الحكم على أشكال المناهج والمفاضلة بينها، وفي تحديد دور المعلم في تنفيذ المناهج وترجمة أهدافها إلى مواقف وخبرات سلوكية يعيشها التلاميذ الذين يُعنى المجتمع بتربيتهم، إضافة إلى تعريف المعلم بعملية تطوير المناهج وأساليبها، وطرق تقويمها، وتزويده بالمهارات اللازمة للمشاركة في هذه العملية، بإعتباره أحد الأطراف الهامة فيها، لا سيّما وهو المنفذ والمطبق للمنهاج في الميدان.
وتسهيلاً لأغراض الدراسة وتقصّي الآراء والأفكار والتوجهات نحو المنهج، وتسهيلاً لأغراض الدراسة وتقصّي الآراء والأفكار والتوجهات نحو المنهج، فقد جرى تقسيم مادة الكتاب إلى خمسة أبواب على النحو التالي: الباب الأول: الأهداف التربوية، الباب الثاني: المنهج التربوي، الباب الثالث: تنظيم خيرات المنهج، الباب الرابع: تطوير المنهج، الباب الخامس: تقويم المنهج.
