عرفت فلسطين قبل الاحتلال بريف نشط مزدهر، وقد شمل مئات القوى، والتي كان يشغل أهلها أكثر من 60% من السكان. ولأهمية الريف الفلسطيني هذا، عملت إسرائيل على محاولة محو قراه من الوجود، محاولة في هذا تعزيز أكاذيبها بخلو فلسطين من السكان، وأنها كانت قفراً حولته إلى بلاد معمورة.
لهذا كان من المهم توثيق الوجود العربي في فلسطين. ولغرض آخر هو نقل حقائق هذا الوجود للأجيال التي لم يتح لها عيش تجربة الوطن. لقد كان من أوهام المحتل ومن يقف وراءه، أن الزمن كفيل بمحو الذاكرة الفلسطينية، فقوبلت أوهامهم بأجيال جديدة أكثر وعياً وتمسكاً بحقوقهم ووطنهم.
لقد كتب الكثير عن بعض مدن فلسطين، وظهرت أعمال معدودة عن الريف الفلسطيني، وإن كانت معظم هذه الأعمال قد ركزت على الجانب السياسي، مهملة جوانب أخرى. فجاء هذا العمل ليتناول الحياة الاجتماعية للقرية، وبهذا يتناول طريقة الحياة وبعض تطوراتها.
اختار صاحب هذا العمل قريته كموضوع، لأنه شارك في حياته،وبهذا يعتبر ملاحظاً مشاركاً، كما عمل منذ المرحلة الثانوية على تسجيل البيانات التي كان يتعمد الحصول عليها من المعرفين الذين يغطون في مجموعهم فترات زمنية متباينة، ويشتملون الجنسين. هذا وللتأكد من صحة البيانات فقد لجأ صاحب هذا العمل إلى أشخاص عدة من القرية ممن عرفوا بمعرفتهم وصدقهم.
لقد تم اعتبار قرية بيت صفافاً حالة، فتم استيفاء ما أمكن من بيانات عن أوجه الحياة فيها، كما تم توثيق الجانب التاريخي بالوثائق والمعلومات التي تم التأكد من صدقها من المعرفين. هذا علماً أن كثيراً من الأحداث والبيانات التي وردت في هذا العمل كانت جزءاً مما عاشه وشاهده الكاتب. وقد كان سجل معظم هذه الأحداث.
إلى جانب ما تم ذكره من أهداف لهذا لعمل، فإن صاحبه يرى فيه تحقيقاً لذاته ووجوده، إذ تمثل قرية بيت صفافاً تحقيق هذا الوجود والذات. فلم يشعر بكامل وجوده إلا في ربوع قريته وبلده، وهذه البؤرة في المرجعية، هي منطلق انتماءاته الوطنية والقومية والإنسانية.
وصاحب هذا العمل لا يذكر أناس قريته فقط، وإنما تمتد ذاكرتي إلى جبالها وتلالها ووديانها، إلى صخور بذاتها، إلى موارس وحبلات، إلى الحيوانات التي عايشها، إلى نباتاتها البرية وما كان فيها من غرس الإنسان. ولا تزال قرية بيت صفافاً البقعة الأهم في هذا الكون.
