يمثل هذا الكتاب جزءاً من موضوع النظرية في علم الاجتماع، يمثل في مفرداته ومحتوياته أهم الاتجاهات النظرية المعاصرة في علم الاجتهاع، أما الجزء الثاني فيتناول النظريات الأولى التي تعرف عادة بالنظريات الكلاسيكية. وإذا كان يمكن تناول المعاصر ضمن مدارس واتجاهات نظرية، فإن النظريات الكلاسيكية تفرض تناول الأفراد. هذا علماً أن مثل هذه النظريات تعتبر من ضرورات فهم ما استجد من معرفة، ليس فقط بسبب استمرارية التراكم المعرفي، وإنما لأن معظم ما جاء معاصراً قد اعتمد على تلك النظريات الكلاسيكية بشكل أو آخر.
لعل أحد الحوافز وراء هذا المشروع، يتمثل في نقص الكتابات العربية في مجال النظرية، ووقوف معظمها زمنياً بحيث لم يتم تناول بعض النظريات، أو ما تم من تعديلات على نظريات أخرى. إن الطالب والباحث في الوطن العربي، وخاصة في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية بحاجة ماسة إلى مثل هذا المؤلف، خاصة وأن كثيرين منهم لا يجيدون لغات أجنبية. لقد اكتشفت هذه الحاجة خلال تدريسي لمادة النظرية في علم الاجتماع في جامعات عربية مختلفة.
لقد اعتمد في تناول مادة الكتاب على كتابات المفكرين وأصحاب النظريات أنفسهم، مع الاستعانة بآراء المحدثين والمعاصرين عند الحاجة. ولهذا جاءت كثير من المراجع بتواريخ قديمة، ولكنها في الوقت نفسه تمثل المراجع الأولية للموضوع.
