ووفقاً للمؤلف حسين الخشن "إن هذه الإعتقادات أو الطقوس أو "الشعائر" التي سوف نتناولها بالبحث والدراسة هنا تضم مفردات من قبيل: التنبؤات الفلكية، نحوسة الأيام، التشاؤم أو الطِّيرَة، الرّقى والأحراز، الإصابة بالعين، الحظ والنصيب، إلى غير ذلك من المفردات التي ينتشر الإعتقاد بها في مختلف الأوساط الشعبية وغير الشعبية على امتداد العالمين العربي والإسلامي، بل في كل أنحاء العالم، ويحاول الكثيرون إضفاء طابع ديني عليها ...".
في معالجة الموضوع يضع المؤلف قواعد عامة في الكتاب تشكل مدخلاً أساسياً لدراسة هذه الظواهر وكيفية التعامل معها (المعتقدات والتقاليد وأمثالها) مما استجد أو قد يستجد. وهذه القواعد يستلها المؤلف من كتاب الله القرآن الكريم "قل هاتوا برهانكم إن كنتم صادقون" [البقرة: 111]، وقاعد أخرى تتعلق بالعقل والعلم واعتماد منطق الأسباب والمسببات ... وكل ذلك يأتي بهدف بيان الحقيقة والإبتعاد عن الأوهام.
