يتضمن هذا الكتاب "أوراق" الندوة التي نظمها المعهد الفرنسي للشرق الأدنى بدمشق، يومي 19 و20 حزيران 2007، حول السير الذاتية في بلاد الشام بوصفها موضوعاً للدراسة ومصدراً للبحث في العلوم الإنسانية؛ وقد انطلقت فكرة هذه الندوة من القناعة بوجود فجوة بين ندوة الدراسات العلمية حول هذا الموضوع وبين وفرة السير الذاتية، والمذكرات، وروايات السيرة الذاتية، والأوراق الخاصة المنشورة باللغة العربية.
وعليه، فقد كان الهدف من عقدها تعميق البحث في تاريخ هذا الجنس الأدبي ودراسة التحوّلات التي طرأت عليه في سورية ولبنان وفلسطين والأردن، مع التركيز بوجه خاص على المرحلة المعاصرة التي انطلقت مع حركة النهضة العربية، وشهدت تطوّراً غير مسبوق لكتب السيرة الذاتية، وقد توخينا، لدى إعداد هذه الندوة، أن تتنوّع تخصصات المشاركين فيها، بحيث يساهم فيها مختصون في الأدب العربي وباحثون في العلوم الإنسانية.
وتوزعت أعمال الندوة على محاور خمسة، وهي: "نشوء جنس السيرة الذاتية وتعريفها"، و"كتابة السيرة الذاتية: دراسة حالات"، و"السير الذاتية كمصدر للدراسات التاريخية"، و"قصص حياة معاصرة: ممارسات وإستخدامات"؛ و"حفظ المذكرات والأوراق الخاصة وإصدارها".
