أسئلة كثيرة تحاول رواية "آريفال... قادم من بعيد" الإجابة عنها من خلال شخصية "سالم" البدوي العربي الذي يأتي إلى هذا المجتمع من الماضي محمّلا بإرث وثقافة العرب. يسافر عبر الزّمن لألف سنة ليقف على حقائق وأمور يعتقد انها مواطن اليوم من المسلّمات، عادات ومناهج وتقاليد انتشرت في غفلة من حرس الوعي لتجد من الجهل مساندا رسميا. تبدأ المقارنة بين مجتمعين متباعدين بألف عام لتُميط عينا "سالم" اللثام عن الانحدار الأخلاقي، وعن هشاشة الترابط الأسري.
يجد البطل نفسه بعد سفر عجيب غريب أمام باب عمارة سرعان ما ينسجم مع ساكنتها ويتعرّف على المشاكل الدّاخلية التي هي بالنسبة لمن يعانيها أثقل من الجبال وفي حقيقة أمرها ليست سوى ابتعاد عن اللحمة الأسرية.
هنا يبدأ البطل، بعدما استجابت لدعوته "الآنسة رزان" (آنسة جميلة غنيّة من ساكني العمارة تقع في غرام "سالم" لصدقه وطيب أخلاقه على عكس كل الرّجال الذين عرفتهم مسبقا) في العمل لحل تلك المشاكل وما هي إلا جولات يسيرة حتى يصلا إلى المطلوب.
بعد الفراغ تهبّ رياح العودة على قلب "سالم" ويعزم عليه لتهمّ الآنسة "رزان" هي الأخرى بمرافقته تاركة خلفها كل ما تملك من مادّيات ومتع للجسد، مستعيضة عنهم بدفء القبيلة في إشارة لطيفة من الكاتب إلى أن كل ما سعى ووصل إليه إنسان اليوم من رقي وتقدّم لا يساوي شيء إن وزن في ميزان الأخلاق، في ميزان "الإنسانية".
