ليس من الصعب على أي إنسان أن يربط لأول وهلة بين الشعر والموسيقى، إذ يكفي أن تتذكر أن الشعر لا ينفصل عن الوزن والإيقاع والتنغيم والإلقاء، وأن هذه العلاقة تمتد في مفهوم الشعر نفسه.
الإيقاع إحساس تبرزه الكلمات يتلبس بها، وهو القالب الذي يحتوي الحركة اللفظية والصوتية للنصر الشعري حركة المعنى، وكلاهما وثيق الصلة، ولاكتشاف أحدهما ينبغي معرفة الآخر بل ويستطيع الدارس أن يكشف الجوانب النفسية والشعورية والاجتماعية التي أنتجت النص، وذلك من خلال المستوى الدلالي الذي يشكله التنوع الصوتي في النص الشعري؛ ولذا فإن النظام الإيقاعي للبنية اللفظية في العربية "يتميز إلى جانب التناظر أو التناسب الصوتي بين الصوامت والحركات وطول المقاطع بالعلاقة التبادلية بين الصيغة أو البنية الإيقاعية والدلالة".
وأيًا كان الشأن؛ فإن تعليل اختيار الشعراء لإيقاعات معينة لا ينبغي أن ينظر إليه نظرة علمية صارمة، ولكن يجب أن يتحدث عنه ضمن عطائيات التأويلية، ويجب أن يظل الاجتهاد في ذلك مفتوحًا إلى يوم القيامة.
