قد اخترت القتال الكلابي لعدة أسباب:
أولاها: أنه شاعر قديم قبل إنه جاهلى، وقيل إنه إسلامي كان معاصراً لجرير والفرزدق والراعى النميرى، وهو ما رجحه جامع ديوانه الدكتور إحسان عباس، ومن ثم فإن شعره ذو قمية لغوية لوقوعه فى عصر الاحتجاج.
وثانيها: أنه شاعر مغمور لم يحظ بدراسات كافية برغم ما يظهر من جودة شعره.
ثالثها: أن ديوانه حديث الظهور فلم يطبع إلا عام 1989م مما يجعلنا نرجح أنه لم تسبق دراسته لاسيما فى الجوانب اللغوية.
منهج الدراسة: والمنهج الذى انتهجته فى هذا الكتاب هو المنهج الوصفى الإحصائى التحليلى فى الموضوعات التى تناولتها هذه الدراسة وهى الجملة الاسمية والجملة الفعلية والنواسخ فى الجانب لنحوى والمصار والمشتقات فى الجانب الصرفى.
وقد قسمت هذا الكتاب إلى مقدمة وفصل تمهيدى (مدخل الدراسة) وخمسة فصول قسم كل فصل من هذه الفصول إلى عدة مباحث، وخاتمة، وقائمة بالمصادر والمراجع التى استخدمتها فى الكتاب.
مصادر الكتاب ومراجعه: ولقد عدت فى هذه الدراسة إلى ما يزيد على مائه مصدر ومرجع من مصادر البحث ومراجعة، وقد تنوعت هذه المصادر بتنوع مواد الدراسة فقد اعتمدت على مصادر النحو ومن أهمها: كتاب سيبويه، والمقتضب، واللمع، والتسهيل، وشذور الذهب، وأوضح المسالك وكتب معانى الحروف الصغيرة مثل: معانى الحروف للرمانى، وحروف المعانى للزجاج والجنى الدانى، ومغنى اللبيب وغيرها.
