الرومانتيكية مذهب أدبي من أخطر ما عرفت الحياة الأدبية العالمية، سواء في فلسفته العاطفية ومبادئه الإنسانية أم في آثاره الأدبية والإجتماعية.
ومن العسير أن نعطي تعريفاً قصيراً لهذا المذهب الأدبي المعقد الجوانب، وكثيراً ما يؤدي تعريف الأشياء على هذا النحو إل تنكيرها والتضليل في مفهومها، وقد يكون من المفيد أن نعرض لمدلوله الإشتقاقي، فالكلمة الفرنسية: Romantisme، والإنجليزية Romanticism، والألمانية Romantik، والأسبانية والإيطالية Romanticismo ترجع في الأصل إلى كلمة Roman، والكلمة الأخيرة كلمة فرنسية قديمة كانت تدل في العصور الوسطى على قصة من قصص المخاطرات شعراً أو نثراً، وكانت تكتب أحياناً Romant وانتقلت إلى اللغة الإنجليزية في شكل Romaunt ثم نسب إليها في الإنجليزية Romantic وهي صفة تدل على ما ينسب إلى قصص المخاطرات، أو ما يثير في النفس خصائصها وما يتصل بها.
وظلت الكلمة في الإنجليزية تثير في الذهن منظراً أو أثراً من آثار العصور الوسطى، ومنذ عام 1760 كان كثير من مؤرخي الأدب يذكرونها مقابلة لكلمة الكلاسيكي، وانتقلت هذه الصفة إلى اللغة الألمانية Romantisch.
