في هذا الكتاب يكشف الدكتور حلمي مرزوق عن كثير من المثالب الفنية والتبعية، الفكرية التي يقع فيها كثير من المشتغلين بالأدب والنقد، ويعني بها اصطناع الأدب المتكلف الذي ينفي عنه التلقائية ويبرر ذلك بقوله " .. لأن التكلف والإصطناع، لا يكونان إلا حيث يكون هناك هدف واضح أو "قصد معلوم"، والقصد المعلوم "سلفاً" يحيل الأدب من دائرة الفن (Art) إلى عالم الحرفة أو الصناعة (Craft)، وهذا لا يجوز في الأدب والأديب بحال، فالصنعة في الأدب إحياء للذكاء وقتل المواهب والملكات، أو هي إلغاء لكل ما وراء الوعي والشعور في الإنسان من قوى وطاقات".
وبناءً على ما تقدم جاء هذا الكتاب محاولة للكشف عن قضية الريادة في عالم الأدب، لأنها قضية الإنسان منذ أن تخلص من الإقطاع وقيود الدين أو سلطان العصور الوسطى على وجه العموم.
وفي هذا السياق يتتبع المؤلف الأصول الإيديولوجية للأدب العربي بما ورثه عن القديم، وبما أضافه في العصر الحديث لتحقيق ما يسمى (الواقعية العربية) التي يستهدفها الأدباء في كتاباتهم فبرأيه أن واقع الأمة العربية بما هي فيه من كفاح محتدم قد فرض نفسه على الأدباء.. والمعركة دائرة اليوم تمتد إلى كل مقدسات الأمة العربية وفلسفتها ...
ما يريد أن يقوله المؤلف أن النقاد والأدباء العرب انساقوا باسم العلم والنقد نحو تاريخ الغرب على عهد اليونان والرومان .. ضاربين عرض الحائط بأساطير العرب والمألوف من "ميثولوجياها" ومعتقداتها على السواء، فجاءت آدابهم غريبة عن واقعهم.
