وكتابه هذا يعالج في فصوله العشرة دراسات هامة لبعض أعلام الأدب الأوروبي في الرواية والشعر والمسرح، وتجمع هذه الدراسات بين العمق والطرفة والتنوع الإيجاز والوضوح، ويتمتع المؤلف بثقافة إنسانية واسعة، بل وهو طلعة على العلوم الطبيعية أيضاً التي يستعير منها بعض تشبيهاته واستعاراته.. وإذا جاز لنا أن نطلق وصفاً على نظرته للأدب والإبداع الأدبي لقلنا أنها نظرة تكاملية جدلية تطورية فهو يدرك إدراكا عميقاً مدى تأثر الأدب بالظروف التاريخية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية، دون مغالاة تجعل من الأدب نتاجاً حتمياً لتلك الظروف.
