في كتابه هذا، يتحرى الدكتور عيسى يوسف بلاطه مفهوم "الرومنطيقية" كمذهب أدبي هو جزء من الثورة الفكرية العامة التي مزيت القرن التاسع عشر. ففي هذا القرن تفتحت أمام الأنسان الأوروبي آفاق واسعة لا حدود لها بفضل الاكتشافات العلمية، والتقدم الاقتصادي والتطور السياسين الأمر الذي انسحب على الأدب والفكر والفن فكانت "الرومنطيقية" من أبرز ما أنتجته هذه الثورة.
يقول الدكتور بلاطه في معرض تقديمه لهذا الكتاب: "أبزر ما يميز الرومنطيقية كمذهب أدبي في رأيي هو اعتبارها الإنسان منبع القيم جميعاً، وجعلها الفرد جديراً بعناية الأدب، فبينما كانت الكلاسيكية تعنى بالإنسان النموذج، فإن الرومنطيقية أخذت تعنى بالإنسان الفرد، واهتمت بإبراز فرديته وشخصيته والاختلاف الذي يمزيه عن غيره، وأصبح الرومنطيقي قادراً على طبع أدبه بطابعه الخاص بما يعبر عنه من عواطف يدفق بها قلبه وصور يموج بها خياله... أصبح حراً في أن يطلق لخياله العنان وأن ينطلق وراء اللامحدود والمطلق...".
وفي هذا السياق يورد المؤلف أهم دعاة المذهب الرومنطيقي في الغرب فبرز "روسو" والناقد "لسنغ" وجاء بعده "هردر" والشاعر "وليم بليك" و"وليم وردزوث" وآخرون هذا في الجزء الأول من الكتاب أم في الجزء الثاني فيبدو الحديث عن "الرومنطيقية العربية، ومعالمها في الشعر العربي الحديث: نشأتها، روادها، وتياراتها، مع نبذ لأهم الأعمال التي اقتفت مذهب "الرومنطيقية"، فيبرز في هذا المجال "جبران خليل جبران" و"خليل مطران"، و"عبد الرحمن شكري"، و"المازني"، و"العقاد"، و"أحمد زكي أبو شادي"، و"بشارة الخوري"، و"إلياس أبو شبكة" وآخرون، أما من سورية فيبرز اسم "أنور العطار"، ومن العراق "بدر شاكر السياب"، و"نازك الملائكة"، و"عبد الوهاب البياتي"، و"أكرم الوردي"، ومن فلسطين "فدوى طوقان".
ومهما يكن من أمر فإن الرومنطيقية الحديثة هي الرومنطيقية الأولى التي اتسمت بهذا الاسم في تاريخ الأدب والفن بإجماع مؤرخي الأدب، وإذا استطاع الدكتور بلاطه أن يُعرِّفها ويقربها إلى القارئ العربي عموماً، والقارئ المختص، فهذا غاية الأدب، وهو مما يضيف أثراً أدبياً فريداً إلى المكتبة العربية.
