ما زالت الأساطير العراقية القديمة تثير إهتمام الدارسين والمتابعين للأدب القديم وتاريخ الحضرات في الشرق المتوسطي، وخصوصاً الأساطير السومرية، لأنها تمثل عتبة مهمة تضيء المستوى الروحي والثقافي الذي أُبدع في جنوب العراق، وظل مستمراً ومتمركزاً في تاريخ الحضارة العراقية الطويل، وصاعداً نحو الديانات المجاورة، وتبدّى في العناصر الدينية ونظامها في سورية.
ولشدة التطابق بدت وكأنها منقولة عند إرتحالها، لذا فإن للأساطير السومرية مساحة واسعة في التداول والإتصال من هنا كان حجم تأثيرها وهيمنتها، وأكثر الأساطير تعمقاً وتداولاً تلك التي كانت فيها الألوهة المؤنثة ذات دور فعال، ومتأت من طبيعة بلاد وادي الرافدين وخصائصها الطبيعية التي تستدعي إهتماماً بنظام الألوهة المؤنثة، وعبادة الأم الكبرى، وصلتها مع عقائد الحياة والخصوبة / التجدد والإنبعاث.
ولعب الجنس، كنظام دلالي، دوره الحيوي في هذه العقائد والشعائر، لأن البنية الذهنية الأسطورية، لم تتعامل معه بإعتباره إستهلاكاً للرغبة والنشاط بل كونه فاعلاً في تطوير الحياة والحفاظ عليها وتحقيق التوازن في الطبيعة والكون، وحركة الأوقات وإنتظام الفصول، وأضفى الفكر العراقي القديم صفة القداسة على طقوس الجنس التي صارت فعلا إلهياً، يحتفل به.
وأنتجت المرحلة السومرية كثيراً من الأساطير والقصائد والأناشيد في هذا المجال الحيوي، بحيث صارت هذه النصوص رأسمالاً ثقافياً، ساهم بقوة في الإستدلال على طبيعة الحياة وعقائدها.
