يقدم ناجح المعموري قراءة تأويلية وتفسيرية للنصوص التوراتية التي تتناول شخصية موسى، إذ يذهب إلى أن هذه النصوص قد أسقطت عليه عناصر من أسطورة الملك جلجامش وسرجون الأكدي، مما صاغ ملامح ومكونات شخصيته الغريبة والمركبة. والكتاب يطرح تساؤلات متعددة حول تاريخية موسى وعلاقته بمصر وفرعون، وأسطورة الخروج من مصر نحو سيناء. وفي تحليله للبنية الذهنية العبرانية يذهب المؤلف إلى أن أسطورة البطل المنقذ، قد تداولتها كثير من الشعوب وأعادت إنتاجها وفق ظروفها الخاصة، وخصائصها الجغرافية، وهو يرى أن العبران قد عرفوا الكثير من الأساطير العراقية كما هو واضح من الدراسات التوراتية، ومنها تلك الأسطورة التي أسقطها العبران على ما بطلهم القومي موسى. ويستند إلى رأي العالم الفرنسي جان بوتيرون الذي يقول إن التوراة بأسفارها الخمسة لم تكن أكثر من إعادة صياغة إلى ملحمة الملك المعروف جلجامش وقد خلص إلى القول بأن شخصية موسى مركبة من مجموعة أساطير جاز عليها بفضل ذكاء وقوة البنية العبرانية التي صاغتها بالاعتماد على الأساطير العديدة للبطل التي عرفت في تاريخ الحضارات.
