تعتبر فترة الحكم المصري في بلاد الشام (1831- 1840م) أو ما يُسمَّى أحياناً بحملة محمد علي باشا على سوريا من المحطات البارزة في التاريخ الأوروبي خلال القرن التاسع عشر بشكل عام وفي تاريخ بلاد الشام العثماني بشكل خاص، ذلك أن الحملة المصرية هذه جرت حوادثها في مرحلة الإنهيار العام للسلطنة العثمانية في منطقة اعتبرت لفترة طويلة الجزء الأكثر أهمية في الإمبراطورية العثمانية.
إن هذا الكتاب يتناول بإسهاب موقف مختلف القوى المحلية أولاً من الحملة المصرية ثم من إجراءات إبراهيم باشا ثم الدوافع التي جعلت بعض سكان بلاد الشام يثورون ضد إبراهيم باشا وسياسته قبل أن تتمكن الدول الأوروبية من التدخل لتحريض بعض هؤلاء السكان ضد الحكم المصري.
ويميز المؤلف هنا بين من ثار ضد محمد علي من غير دعم أو تأليب خارجي وبين تلك القوى المحلية التي وقفت إلى جانب الدول الأوروبية بتحريض ودعم مباشرين منها.
