لا يميز الكثيرون بين المرض العقلي والمرض النفسي إذ يعدونهما شيئاً واحداً. وهذا راجع في جزء منه إلى انعدام الثقافة النفسية وعدم اطلاع الكثيرين على الحقائق العامة في علم الأمراض النفسية. إن الطب النفسي من فروع الطب الذي يتناول أسباب نشوء الأمراض النفسية وكيفية علاجها. وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض الدكتور كمال دسوقي إلى طبيعة الأمراض النفسية وأعراضها وتصنيفها، وهو يرى أنها تقسم إلى قسمين من حيث الأصل: عضوية الأصل وسيكولوجية الأصل. كما يقدم قائمة تفصيلية بأسماء الاضطرابات الرئيسية وما يتفرع عنها مثل: التأخر العقلي، أمراض المخ العضوية، الذهانات الوظيفية، أمراض العصاب، والاضطرابات الشخصية وغيرها. كما يعرض لأهم الذهانات العضوية مثل الشلل العام، اضطرابات الغدد، أورام المخ، تصلب شرايين المخ، التهاب الدماغ، وصدمات الرأس.
ويخصص قسماً من الكتاب للحديث عن الذهانات الوظيفية، كالفصام وهوس الاكتئاب والهذاء. ولقد اصطلح الأطباء على تسمية الأمراض التي تتأرجح بين الاستعداد والاكتئاب أو التي تظهر في سن معينة بالأمراض الحديثة، وهي تشمل التخلف العقلي الصرع والشيخوخة. والمؤلف يتناول بالتفصيل: الأمراض العصبية النفسية المعروفة بالعصاب كالهستيريا، والقلق والخوف والتسلط. أما أمراض الطبع مثل تسمم الإدمان، الشخصية السيكولوجية وانحرافات السلوك فقد خصص لها جزءا من الكتاب وهو يقف في كل مرض ليشير غلى تاريخ تمايزه طبياً ومدى حدوثه وبدايات ظهوره وتطور أعراضه والصور الإكلينيكية التي تظهر فيها جملة أعراضه.
