يعرض هذا الكتاب منهجاً تفصيلياً لتحليل وتصميم نظم المعلومات باستخدام لغة النمذجة ، وهو يوضع كيفية: تحقيق الانسجام والتكامل بين نماذج التحليل ونماذج التصميم، السيطرة على تعقيد نماذج الأنظمة الكبيرة؛ تحسين بنيان النظم البرمجية؛ بناء أنظمة سهلة الصيانة وقابلة للتوسع التدريجي إجراء الاختبارات وإدارة تغير المتطلبات.
يعتمد الكتاب على مبدأ التعلم بالأمثلة إذ يعرض كل مفاهيم التحليل والتصميم من خلال مجموعة من الأمثلة الواقعية التي تنتمي إلى مجالات تطبيقية متنوعة بالإضافة إلى تقديم تدريب موجّه متكامل يقود القارئ خطوة خطوة عبر مرحلتي التحليل والتصميم، وهو يسعى إلى تضييق الفجوة بين الدروس الأكاديمية والمهارات العملية اللازمة لصناعة البرمجيات.
