يجد بعض الناس في تدمير أو تخريب الحاسبات تحقيقاً لأهداف معينة، فقد تلجأ إحدى الدول وبهدف إرباك العدو إلى تدمير قواعد المعطيات التي تساعده في اتخاذ القرار، كما قد يلجأ إلى هذا الأسلوب موظف ما يشعر بأن ربّ عمله لم ينصفه، وبما أن التدمير الفيزيائي يكون مستحيلاً في كثير من الأحيان فقد ابتدع بعض المبرمجين أنماطاً مختلفة من الفيروسات تستطيع مهاجمة الحاسبات والمعطيات المخزنة فيه، بهدف خداع المستثمرين أوجد أولئك المبرمجون العديد من الأساليب التي تسمح لهم بإخفاء الأهداف الحقيقية لبرامجهم بحيث لا يستطيع المستثمر العادي اكتشافها. وقد نشر في السنوات الأخيرة عدد غير قليل من المقالات والكتب المتشائمة التي تتناول فيروسات الحاسب وأخطارها مما أثار جديداً من الخوف بين مستخدمي الحاسبات، ولا يعتبر هذا الخوف مبرراً إلا بالنسبة للمستخدمين ذوي المستوى المتوسط من الخبرة أو ما دونه فبالنسبة لهم يبدو الحاسب آلة شديدة التعقيد غريبة السلوك. ومن أجل تذليل هذه العقبات التي تواجه المستخدمين على مختلف خبراتهم في الحاسبات كان هذا الكتاب.
يعرض نماذج مختلفة من الفيروسات مع شرح لآلية عمل كل منها وعرض الشيفرة البرمجية الكاملة له بلغة التجميع، إضافة إلى برنامج مكتوب بلغة الباسكال يستطيع تحديد الملفات المصابة، بحيث يصبح القارئ أكثر إدراكاً لهذه الآفة التي تستطيع الوصول إلى موادر حاسبه. علماً أن جميع الفيروسات المدروسة معروفة ويمكن التخلص منها بواسطة برامج مكافحة الفيروسات المتوفرة.
