يتناول الكتاب لغة C من خلال عرض قواعد اللغة ومسائل الخوارزميات التقليدية مع ما يتطلبه من تعريف لبنى المعطيات القياسية كالأشجار الثنائية والمكدس ورتل الانتظار وغيرها. وهو بذلك يشكل مدخلاً واسعاً إلى لغة ++C لأنه يقدم البناء السليم لمرحلتي التحليل والتصميم باعتماد منهجية غرضية التوجه والتي يجب أن يمر بها كل مبرمج يسعى إلى الاحتراف.
وتأتي أهمية الكتاب من كون الجزء الأول يتناول لغة C كما عرّفها Ritchie في كتاب The C Programming Language (بالاشتراك مع Brian Kernighan). وهو لا يقتصر على عرض قواعد لغة C بل يذهب أبعد من ذلك من خلال التعرض لمسائل خوارزمية تقليدية مع ما يتطلبه ذلك من تعريف لبنى معطيات تعتبر إلى حد بعيد قياسية (كالأشجار الثنائية والمكدسي ورتل الانتظار وغيرها). أما الجزء الثاني من الكتاب فيفترض أن يكون القارئ قد تآلف مع مفاهيم البرمجة الإجرائية عموماً ومع برامج لغة C خصوصاً إذ لا يعرض لغة ++C من خلال ما تتضمنه هذه اللغة من كلمات محجوزة إضافية، أو قواعد صرفية جديدة، بل من خلال ما تدعمه مفاهيم البرمجة غرضية التوجه، مع عرض الأوعية التي تستوعب تلك المفاهيم، وهذا ما يتضح من طريقة ترتيب فصول هذا الجزء الذي يشكل، على صغره، مرجعاً تعليمياً للانتقال إلى لغة ++C.
