"العربى" ليس الوحيد الذى يتغير طبعه وحاله عندما يخرج من "ضبعة"، فهذه هى الحقيقة الغريبة فى هذه الحارة المستطيلة الضيقة، ربما كان تأثيراً وتأثراً جغرافياً أو هندسياً يكسب بعض الأماكن صفات تغير من أخلاق وطبائع سكانها، حتى ولو كانوا يعيشون حياتهم خارجها بشكل مختلف.
لا أحد يعرف ، ولا أحد يفكر، ولا يبدو أن أحداً فى "ضبعة" أوخارجها يهتم أساساً بالتحولات الغريبة التى تتلبس سكانها بمجرد دخولهم من بوابتها الضيقة التى تفتح فمها على الشارع العمومى، وتبتلع فيه سكانها الذين يعيشون جوها المسحور باستسلام، أو بحب لا يمكن تفسيره.
"عبد المجيد أفندى" السمج فى تعاملاته مع أبنائه الثلاثة، ومع زوجته السمراء العجفاء، ومع جيرانه جميعاً، ومع كل شخص وحيوان وحشرة تسكن حارة "ضبعة"، يتحول تحت التأثير السلبى للخروج إلى الشارع العمومى إلى شخص رزين وطيب ومتعاون، ويصير صوته الذى يكرهه "عربى" ويشبهه بصوت الماعز- دون ان يتغير عن نغمته الخنفاء- علامة على الرقة والتبسط فى معاملة الناس، وهو المعروف فى "ضبعة" بأنه يكره حتى نفسه ويستكثر عليها النعمة.
