المتلمس صاحب هذا الديوان، هو من الشعراء الفحول المقلين في العصر الجاهلي. والحديث عنه مختلف عن كثير من الشعراء المعاصرين له، فقد عاش حياة حضرية مستقرة بعيدة عن حياة البوادي والتنقل، وتأثر بالحضارات التي احتك بها، واتصل بثقافات دينية متعددة، ودان بالديانة المسيحية، وقد حفظ الشعراء شعره، فتأثروا به منذ الجاهلية، وأعجبوا بما أنشد، واقتبسوا منه، وعزوا بعض أبياته إليهم كالفرزدق وبشار ودريد بن الصمة... وغيرهم.
وقد اشتهر بهجائه ومديحه وأمثاله ووصفه الدقيق للثور، ورثائه لنفسه في غاية من الدقة النفسية في رائيته المضمومة. وتعدّت شهرته إلى الأمثال، فما هناك من شاعر خرج من شعره أمثال سارت على الألسن، وسجلت في كتب الأمثال كشعر المتلمس، حتى أن كثيراً من هذه الأمثال غدت حكماً خالدة.
وقد استهل المحقق ديوان المتلمس الضبعي الذي نقلب صفحاته بمقدمة ضمّت دراسة مفصلة عن المرحلة التاريخية والعقائدية التي واكبت المتلمس، ثم أتبع ذلك بالديوان الذي اعتنى بجمعه وترتيب قصائده ترتيباً أبجدياً حسب القافية، ثم أتبع ذلك بملحق ضمّ ترجمة للشاعر من بعض كتب الأدب والتراجم.
