إذا كان التاريخ لا يشكل غاية الرواية، فإنه لا مانع أن يكون إحدى الوسائل التي يمكن بها إعادة كتابته بما يراعي شروط الأمانة التاريخية وتسلسل الأحداث كما حصلت في الواقع، فالعمل الروائي عمل فني، يعيد تشكيل الواقع التاريخي أو العياني وفق معايير فنية، والفني غير التاريخي.
من على هذه الشرفة، نطل على رواية "القوافل.. كتاب الغربة والدم.." للروائي اللبناني عباس أرناؤوط التي يتناول فيها واقعة (كربلاء) بشخوصها ووقائعها وأحداثها، وقد راعى فيها الأمانتين التاريخية والروائية، فاسحا المجال لفضاء متخيلا له جذور الواقعية/ التاريخية، لهذه المرحلة من التاريخ الإسلامي وفي ردمه الفجوات بينها بالمتخيل الروائي إنما يقدم لنا شخصيات تاريخية ورائية قلقة تبحث عن الحقيقة وعن الحق وتحارب الباطل، وتسعى إلى تغيير الواقع ولكنها تصطدم بسلطة الأمر الواقع، فتكون النهاية مأسوية وأذى وتهجيرا وتقتيلا، وبهذا لا تكون الرواية مجرد سيرة روائية عامة لبلاد شهدت تحولات درامية في تلك الحقبة من التاريخ، بل هي سيرة امتدت نتائجها إلى واقعنا الراهن، وكأنها ملحمة روائية تاريخية ترى الحاضر في عيون الماضي.
هذه الحكاية/ الملحمة يصوغها عباس أرناؤوط في إحدى وأربعين وحدة سردية اختار لكل واحدة منها عنوانا، في علاقات ترابط وتسلسل، بحيث تكون الوحدة السردية بداية خيط سردي جديد يفضي إلى وحدة لاحقة، وهكذا نكون أمام قافلة من الوحدات المتعاقبة الني يربط بينها حبل واحد، وبهذا المعنى نحن إزاء بنية روائية حديثة على مستوى العلاقة بين الوحدات السردية، وعلى مستوى اللغة والمعنى، وهذه البنية تناسب نصا حركيا، حيا، يأخذ بأنفاس القارئ من أول الرواية حتى آخرها.
