في بداية القرن السادس الهجريّ سافر راوي الحكاية مع قافلةٍ إلى مدينة طوس في إقليم خراسان، وفي القافلة التقى الإمام "أبا حامدٍ الغزاليّ" الّذي حكى له قصّة حياته ورحلته من الشكّ إلى اليقين.
في الوقت نفسه قتلت حركة الباطنيّة إمام مسجدٍ في قريةٍ قرب مدينة الريّ، فخرج ابنه في رحُلةٍ إلى قلعة آلموت "عشّ الصقر" مركز الباطنيّة ليتعرّف على عقائد هذه الطائفة وأسرارها.
والباطنيّة حركةً سرّيّةً عرفت، فيما بعد، باسم الطائفة الإسماعيلية أو طائفة الحشّاشين، زعيمهم "الحسن بن الصبّاح" الّذي يؤمن بالعنف والإغتيال وسيلةً للوصول إلى أهدافه.
سمّيت بالباطنيّة لأنها تقول إنّ للنصوص الدينيّة ظاهراً وباطناً، وإنّها تتبع باطن الشرع، بعض الأماكن التي دارت فيها الحكاية:
"الريّ": مدينة قديمة هي اليوم جزءٌ من مدينة طهران الحديثة.
"نيسابور": مدينة تاريخيّة في إقليم خراسان شرقيّ إيران، كانت مركزاً ثقافياً وإقتصادياً في العصر العبّاسيّ.
"طوس" مدينةٌ تاريخيّة في خراسان ولد فيها الإمام "أبو حامدٍ الغزاليّ"، وتعرف اليوم باسم مدينة "مشهد".
"آلموت": قلعة حصينةً في جبال الديلم، مركز الحركة الباطنيّة ومقام زعيمها "الحسن ابن الصبّاح"، معنى الكلمة بالعربيّة "عشّ الصقر"، وهو الإسم الّذي استعمل في الرواية.
