ولد سنة 1949 بمدينة برشيد.
حصل على دبلوم الدراسات العليا في اللغة العربية وآدابها من كلية الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية بفاس سنة 1987.
كما أحرز على دكتوراه الدولة في الآداب من جامعة السوربون بباريس سنة 1990.
يشتغل أستاذا جامعيا.
بدأ أحمد المديني النشر سنة 1967 بجريدة العلم.
التحق باتحاد كتاب المغرب سنة 1972.
يتوزع إنتاجه بين القصة القصيرة، الشعر، النقد الأدبي والترجمة.
وقد نشر أعماله بعدة صحف ومجلات: العلم، المحرر، الاتحاد الاشتراكي، النهار (لبنان)، السفير (لبنان)، الثورة، الجمهورية (العراق)، أنفاس، آفاق أقلام، الآداب، الطريق، تحولات، كتابات معاصرة، الكرمل،

القصص التي تنتظمها هذه المجموعة تقدم تجربة كتابية مزدوجة في طموحها لطرح صيغ المحكي، وتوليد الأفق الشعري انطلاقاً من هذا المحكي، بأدوات الفن والعالم، ومن داخل الكتابة وعبر خارجها. الخارج هو اللحظة اليومية، الزمن الاجتماعي الذي يتشكل من هموم الحياة والشخوص المترنحة خلالها، هو الحدث، والشيء المتكون أو في طريق التكوين مما يريد أن يعرفه القارئ، ويندهش به. أما الداخل فهو هذا الخارج نفسه آهلاً بإرهافات الفن الفريدة، بحيوية النص التي تتخطى نفسها في ضدية لا متناهية، وتقدم للقارئ تقاليد حكائية، لم يتعود عليها في جغرافية السرد والوحدات الثلاث المنسجمة.
داخل وخارج، إذن كتابة مضاعفة، الخط الواقعي المتتالي والمتعدد في زمنيته، والرؤيا الحلمية ضمن الاستبطانية ضمن إطار النص البصري، هذه بعض عناصر الوعي الفني والإمكاني في هذه المجموعة القصصية للقاص المغربي أحمد المديني، وهي تجعل أمامك كل طرقات النص مفتوحة وأولها "الطريق إلى المنافي".
