يتناول الكتاب صعود حركة المقاومة الفلسطينية منذ حرب سنة 1967 التي أطلقت عليها تسمية "النكسة"، وما تحقق نتيجة هذا الصعود من حضور للشعب الفلسطيني وقضيته الوطنية خلال السنوات التالية، على الرغم من العثرات و"الانتكاسات" الكبيرة التي واجهتها، في الأردن (1970-1971)، ثم من خلال خروج النظام المصري من المواجهة في أواخر سبعينيات القرن الماضي، وبالتالي انشغال الأطراف العربية الشرقية بحروب داخلية وإقليمية، منها: الحرب "الأهلية" في لبنان؛ الحرب العراقية – الإيرانية؛ التناقضات الداخلية بين أطراف جبهة الصمود والتصدي. وبعد الاعتراف العالمي الكاسح بحركة التحرر الفلسطينية وحقوق شعبها منذ أواسط سبعينيات القرن الماضي، تعاظمت الهجمات عليها، ولا سيما في ساحتي الأراضي المحتلة ولبنان، وازدادت محاولات الإجهاض السياسية لإنجازاتها هذه. وهي محاولات استمرت، حتى بعد اندلاع الانتفاضة الكبرى الأولى في الأراضي المحتلة في أواخر الثمانينيات، إلى أن قادت، مع جملة من التطورات الخارجية والداخلية، إلى اتفاق أوسلو والاتفاقات اللاحقة، ومساعي الحكومات الإسرائيلية المتلاحقة بعدها لتحجيم التطلعات الفلسطينية وحصرها في إطار الحل الإسرائيلي القائم على إدامة "الحكم الذاتي" كحل نهائي، ومنع قيام حتى هذه "الدولة" الصغيرة التي طالب بها الشعب الفلسطيني.
وعلى الرغم من ذلك فإن "الفكرة" تبقى راسخة لدى الأجيال المتعاقبة من الشعب الفلسطيني، أن لا رضوخ ولا تسليم بدوام الظلم الرهيب الذي لحق بالشعب الفلسطيني منذ نكبته الأولى، ولا فكاك من مواصلة النضال حتى إنهاء هذا الظلم وفرض احترام حقوق الشعب الفلسطيني وكرامته على أرض وطنه.
