لم تخل كتب الأدب، ولا كتب اللغة ونحوها وصرفها، من شعر لهذيل، وأكثر شعرائهم دوراناً فيها أبو ذؤيب الذى ورد اسمه أو شعره فى لسان العرب وحده فى أكثر من ستمائة موضع، وقد عنى العلماء قديما بجمع أشعار القبائل وروايتها، منهم الأصمعى وأبو عبيدة وأبو عمرو الشيبانى وابن الاعرابى، وكان مما جمعوه شعر هذيل. ومما يذكر أن الإمام الشافعى رضى الله عنه كان يحفظ آلاف الأبيات من شعرهم، بإعرابها وغريبها ومعانيها.
والسكرى فى كتابه يروى أن بعض القصائد نسب لأكثر من شاعر، وقد يكتفى بذلك القول، وقد يعيد روايتها عند ذكر صاحبها المنسوبة إليه، مع اختلاف فى بعض الأحيان فى الترتيب والشرح. كان عملى فيما طبع من شرح السكرى والبقية وشرحها، أن أتأكد من كل ضبط، وأقابله بالمصادر الأخر، وأنسب ما يذكره فى الشرح،من شعر غير منسوب، حسب ما تسعف المعلومات والمراجع التى بين يدى.
والسكرى، ومن روى عنهم، ومن أخذ عن السكرى، هم رواة اللغة وغريبها وقواعدها وما اتصل بالعرب من أماكن وأيام، وعلى أقوالهم ومؤلفاتهم اعتمد مؤلفو المعاجم ورواة الأخبار، وقد أخرت قصائد الشعراء الخمسة: أبى كبير وساعدة بن جؤية وأبى خراش والمتنخل وأسامة بن الحارث، الذين لم أعثر على شرح السكرى لأشعارهم، ليكون ما عمله السكرى متصلاً، وسأذكر عند شرح شعرهم ما عثرت عليه منسوباً للسكرى فى كتب اللغة وغيرها، ولا شك أن السكرى شرح شعرهم، فقد أشار هو إلى ذلك فى مواضع من شروحه، ونقلت الكتب المتأخرة نصوصاً عنه تتصل بهم، وعسى الله أن يوفق إلى العثور على ما خفى عنا الآن من شرحه لأشعارهم.
