هذا الكتاب من عيون التراث الشعري العربي، ذلك الذي يدور على ألسنة القبائل العربية وشعرائها، وبالتحديد شعر "هذيل" وهي قبيلة تنتمي بنسبها إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وفي هذا الكتاب جمع أبي سعيد السكري ما ورد عن شعراء قبيلة هذيل وصنعه تحت عنوان "شرح أشعار الهذليين" وضمّ فيه تسعة عشر شاعراً يعود نسبهم إلى هذيل ومنهم مالك بن الحرث وصخر الغي وأبو المثلم والأعلم واسمه حبيب بن عبد الله وهو أخو صخر الغي وأبو جندب وحذيفة بن أنس وآخرون، وهي في مضمونها أشعار فخر وحماسة ومديح وغزال وهجاء وغيرها من الأغراض الشعرية.
والسكري في كتابه يروي أن بعض القصائد نسبت لأكثر من شاعر، مع ذكر صاحبها المسنوبة إليها، فيضبطها وقابلها بالمصادر الأخرى. والسكري ومن روى عنهم، ومن أخذ عنهم، هم من رواة اللغة وغريبها وقواعدها وما اتصل بالعرب من أماكن وأيام، وعلى أقوالهم ومؤلفاتهم اعتمد مؤلفوا المعاجم ورواة الأخبار.
ومن أشعار الهذليين نقرأ ما قاله صخر الغي يرثي تليداً: وما إن صوت نائحة بليلٍ/بسبلل لا تنام مع الهجود، تجهنا غاديين فساءلتني/بواحدةٍ وأسأل عن تليدي، فقلت لها: فأما ساقٍ حر/فبان مع الأوائل من ثمود (...)".
يتضح من هذه الأبيات أن الشعر كان صورة عن حياة العرب وأحوالهم في الموت والحروب والغزو وكل ما يفتخرون به وما يحبونه وما يروق لهم؛ وهو يتخذ شكل المنادمة أي أن شاعراً يدلو بدلوه في أمرٍ ما فيرد عليه شاعر آخر وهكذا وهو مما نقلته كتب المتأخرون من نصوص تتصل بهم وبحوادث ذلك الزمان.
