لم تأخذ الرّسوم والرّموز والنقوش الفنيّة القديمة المكتشفة في سورية التي تعود إلى فترات ما قبل التاريخ حقها في الظّهور، على الرّغم من أنّها تشكّل مادّةً علميّةً مهمَّةً للباحثين والمهتمّين، وتقدّم فكرةً جيدةً عن الحياة في تلك الفترات التي سبقت التّاريخ، كما أنّها تشكّل سجلاتٍ موثقةً تصوّر كثيراً من نواحي الحياة القديمة وطريقة تفكير إنسان ما قبل التّاريخ في منطقتنا، وتؤكّد وجود الحسّ الجمالي العالي والذائقة البصرية الفطريّة لديه منذ آلاف السنين.
لذلك جاء هذا الكتاب لجمع وتوثيق وشرح وتصنيف تلك الرّسوم والرّموز الفنيّة القديمة التي وجدت في مناطق عدة من سورية مثل (الجرف الأحمر والمريبط وجعدة المغارة وحالولة وبقرص...) التي تنتمي لفترات ما قبل التاريخ لكي نستطيع دراستها وتسليط الضّوء عليها، ولتؤسّس لدراسات لاحقةٍ تستند إلى هذا التّوثيق، وتستمدّ منه عناصرها الأوليّة ما يُكْتَشَفُ لاحقاً، ولكي نساعد القارئ والمهتم بحضاراتنا القديمة في قراءة نتاجها الفني والتّمتع بمستوى الجمال البصريّ فيها.
